What you'll hear, what you'll say
| Finnish | English |
|---|---|
| Mitä saisi olla? | What can I get you? |
| Haluaisin kahvia. | I'd like some coffee. |
| Saisinko teetä? | Could I have some tea? |
| Otan pullan. | I'll have a bun. (literally “I take”) |
| Yksi kahvi ja kaksi pullaa, kiitos. | One coffee and two buns, please. |
| Jotain muuta? — Ei kiitos. | Anything else? — No, thank you. |
| Paljonko se maksaa? | How much is it? |
| Maksan kortilla. | I'll pay by card. |
Haluaisin (I'd like) and saisinko (could I have) are the polite forms you'll learn properly with the conditional much later — for now, use them as ready-made phrases. They take the partitive: Haluaisin vettä.
In most Finnish cafés you order and pay at the counter, then carry your tray to a table. Table service is for restaurants.
