Opinions & Debates

Agreeing, disagreeing and arguing politely

  1. 1

    Creo que…: giving your opinion

From a soft *creo que* to a firm *estoy segura de que* — and why *no creo que* takes the subjunctive.

    • Opinions come with an opener: creo que, me parece que (soft) → en mi opinión, para mí → estoy seguro/a de que, sin duda (firm).
    • Yo diría que… — the conditional makes a view sound considered.
    • Creo que + indicative; no creo que + subjunctive: No creo que sea caro.
    • Or keep creo que and negate the second verb: Creo que no es caro.
    • Creo que sí / creo que no — I think so / I don't think so.
    • ¿Qué te pareció…? — Me pareció genial: parecer works like gustar.

Estoy de acuerdo… o no: agreeing and disagreeing

Agree warmly, disagree gently — *tiene sentido*, *depende*, *¡qué va!* and the art of *ya, ya, pero…*

    • Agree with estoy de acuerdo, es verdad, tienes razón, tiene sentido — or go all in: estoy totalmente de acuerdo.
    • Agree con someone en something: Estoy de acuerdo con Luana en que…
    • Disagree gently: no sé yo, depende, no es exactamente así, estoy de acuerdo en parte, yo lo veo de otra manera.
    • ¡Qué va! — a friendly, emphatic no way.
    • Ya, ya, pero… — the real view comes after the pero.
    • Weigh both sides with por un lado…, por otro…

Además, sin embargo, o sea: building an argument

The small words that hold an argument together — which belong in speech, which in writing, and when *pero* must become *sino*.

    • Además adds a point; o sea and es decir restate it; por eso draws the consequence.
    • De hecho — in fact; por cierto — by the way. Actualmente means currently, never actually.
    • Aun así — even so: grant the drawback, keep your position.
    • In speech, pero; in writing and meetings, sin embargo and no obstante.
    • After a negative, replace with sino: No vamos en agosto, sino en septiembre.

Yo qué sé: debating without falling out

Softeners, questions that cushion, and a friendly debate over Saturday lunch: cinema or streaming?

    • Un poco, algo, ¿no?, yo qué sé, mira and la verdad soften a view without changing it.
    • Un poco never agrees: un poco larga. Poco on its own means not very.
    • Turn a criticism into a question: ¿No crees que…?, ¿No sería mejor…?, ¿Y si…?
    • ¿No crees que + indicative invites agreement: ¿No crees que es caro?
    • The sobremesa is where debates happen — go after the idea, never the person — and they end best a carcajadas.
