Modal Verbs

Can, want, must, should, may, like

  1. 1

Können, wollen, müssen: can, want, must

Three modal verbs for ability, wishes and duties — and the German habit of sending the main verb to the end.

    • können (can), wollen (want), müssen (must, have to) are modal verbs.
    • ich and er / sie / es share one form with no ending: ich kann, er kann.
    • The singular changes its vowel: kann, will, muss — but können, wollen, müssen.
    • The modal stands second and the main verb goes to the end, in the infinitive: Ich kann gut Deutsch sprechen.
    • Ich will means I want — not I will.

    Dürfen, sollen: may, should

Ask for permission, pass on advice — and find out why “du musst nicht” doesn't mean “you mustn't”.

    • dürfen — may, to be allowed to: Darf ich hier sitzen?
    • sollen — should, someone else's advice or wish: Die Ärztin sagt, ich soll mehr schlafen.
    • Soll ich…? offers help: Soll ich das Brot kaufen?
    • nicht müssen = don't have to; nicht dürfen = mustn't.
    • man (one, people) takes the er form: Hier darf man nicht parken.

Mögen and möchten: like and would like

Say what you like, ask politely for what you want in a café — and why “Ich will…” can sound blunt.

    • mögen + noun — to like: Ich mag Kaffee. Magst du Brezeln?
    • möchte — would like — with a noun or an infinitive at the end: Ich möchte ins Museum gehen.
    • möchte, möchtest, möchte, möchten, möchtet, möchten — and keep the umlaut: mochte means liked.
    • Order with Ich möchte… or Ich hätte gern…; Ich will… sounds demanding.
    • A clear Nein, danke is polite. To pay: Zahlen, bitte! — Zusammen oder getrennt?

    Pläne machen: mich, dich, uns

Object pronouns, the verb at the very end after dass — and Marina and Luana fix their Saturday.

    • Object pronouns: mich, dich, ihn / sie / es, uns, euch, sie / Sie.
    • Of er, sie, es, only er changes as an object — to ihn, like der → den.
    • With a modal, the infinitive still goes last, separable verbs in one piece: Kannst du mich abholen?
    • After dass, the conjugated verb goes to the very end: …, dass er lernen muss.
    • Plans: Hast du Zeit? Kannst du mitkommen? Wollen wir…? Abgemacht! Schade!
