Mag and möchte
mögen — to like — usually goes with a noun:
- Ich mag Kaffee. — I like coffee.
- Magst du Brezeln? — Do you like pretzels?
- Marina mag Berlin. — Marina likes Berlin.
möchte — would like — is a special form of mögen (grammarians call it the Konjunktiv II), and it behaves like a modal verb of its own: with a noun, or with an infinitive at the end.
- Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte. — I'd like a coffee, please.
- Wir möchten ins Museum gehen. — We'd like to go to the museum.
| Pronoun | mögen (like) | möchte (would like) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mag | möchte |
| du | magst | möchtest |
| er / sie / es | mag | möchte |
| wir | mögen | möchten |
| ihr | mögt | möchtet |
| sie / Sie | mögen | möchten |
Mind the dots: möchte needs its umlaut. Without it, mochte means liked — the past.
