The Subjunctive Mood

The mood of doubt, wish, and possibility

  1. 1

Espero que você goste: the present subjunctive

A new mood for wishes and requests — built in one step from the eu form you already know.

    • The subjunctive is for what isn't a fact yet: wishes, hopes and requests.
    • Build it from the eu form: drop the -o, then -ar → -e, -er / -ir → -a: falo → fale, como → coma.
    • Irregular eu stems come along — tenho → tenha, faço → faça, venho → venha — and spelling keeps the sound: chegue, fique.
    • Quero que, espero que, peço que, tomara que + subjunctive when someone else does the action.
    • Same person? Use the infinitive: Quero viajar, but Quero que você viaje.

Seja, esteja, vá: irregulars and feelings

Six verbs that ignore the eu-form rule — and the feelings and good wishes that call for the subjunctive.

    • Six verbs have their own subjunctive: seja, esteja, vá, saiba, queira, dê.
    • Vamos and vão look like the present; vá and dê need their accents.
    • Feelings about someone else take the subjunctive: fico feliz que, tenho medo de que, é uma pena que, sinto muito que.
    • Same person? Use the infinitive: Fico feliz de estar aqui.
    • A bare que + subjunctive makes a wish: Que você seja muito feliz!

Duvido que, talvez, é importante que

Doubt, maybe and advice call for the subjunctive — certainty stays in the indicative.

    • Certainty → indicative: sei que, tenho certeza de que, acho que, é verdade que.
    • Doubt and possibility → subjunctive: duvido que, não acho que, é possível que, pode ser que.
    • Talvez before the verb takes the subjunctive: Talvez ela esteja em casa.
    • Advice for a specific person: é importante / bom / melhor / preciso que + subjunctive.
    • General advice uses the infinitive: É importante chegar cedo.
