The body, feeling unwell, and a visit to the doctor

  1. 1

O corpo: parts of the body

From head to toe with the right articles — and doer, the verb for what hurts.

    • Learn each part of the body with its article: a cabeça, a boca, a garganta, o braço, a perna, o joelho, o pé.
    • A mão is feminine; as costas is always plural — a costa is the coast.
    • A orelha is the outer ear; o ouvido is the inner ear.
    • Doer agrees with the body part: dói for one, doem for more — A cabeça dói. Os pés doem.
    • Ask Onde dói? — answer Dói aqui.
    • With your own body, the article often does the job of my: Ela fecha os olhos.

Estou com febre: saying how you feel

Fever, flu and a sore throat — estar com, how you feel, and what to say to someone who's ill.

    • Estar com + noun for what's wrong right now: Estou com febre, com tosse, com gripe.
    • Aches: dor de cabeça, dor de garganta, dor de dente, dor de ouvido, dor de barriga — or dor no / na / nas + the place: dor nas costas.
    • The same pattern for fome, sede, sono, frio, calor: Estou com fome.
    • Resfriado / resfriada and gripado / gripada agree with the person: Estou resfriada.

    No consultório: seeing a doctor

Tell a doctor what's wrong and for how long, understand what you need to do — and how Brazil's public health system works.

    • O consultório (private practice), o posto de saúde (public health centre), o pronto-socorro (emergency). Address the doctor as doutor / doutora.
    • Eu queria marcar uma consulta — I'd like to make an appointment.
    • Precisar de + noun: preciso de um médico. Precisar + verb, with no de: preciso descansar.
    • How long: present + há — Estou com febre há três dias. Ask Há quanto tempo…?
    • O que você tem? — What's the matter?
    • The SUS is Brazil's free public health system; for an ambulance, dial 192.

    Na farmácia: medicine and instructions

Ask the pharmacist for something, understand the instructions on a prescription, and take your medicine on time.

    • Medicine is something you tomar: tomo, toma, tomamos, tomam — tomar um comprimido.
    • O remédio, o comprimido, o xarope, a receita — ask Você tem alguma coisa para…?
    • How often: uma vez / duas vezes por dia, de oito em oito horas (8/8h).
    • When: antes / depois das refeições, em jejum.
    • Plenty of medicines need no prescription, but antibiotics do — ask Precisa de receita?
    • Melhoras para ela! — wish someone a quick recovery.
