Estar com: what's wrong
To say what's wrong with you at the moment, Brazilians use estar com + a noun — literally to be with:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Estou com febre. | I've got a temperature. (a febre — fever) |
| Estou com tosse. | I've got a cough. (a tosse) |
| Estou com gripe. | I've got flu. (a gripe) |
| Estou com dor de cabeça. | I've got a headache. (a dor — pain) |
Two common complaints also come as adjectives, which agree with the person:
- resfriado / resfriada — Estou resfriada. — I've got a cold. (o resfriado — a cold)
- gripado / gripada — Ele está gripado. — He's got flu.
You'll also hear ter: Tenho febre. Tenho dor de cabeça. For how you are right now, though, estar com is the everyday choice.
