Opinions and Debates

Expressing, agreeing and disagreeing

  1. 1

Secondo me, direi che: giving your opinion

The opinion ladder from gentle to firm — which openers take the congiuntivo — and the little sounds boh, mah and beh.

    • The ladder: penso che → direi che → secondo me → dal mio punto di vista → sinceramente → sono sicuro che → senza alcun dubbio.
    • Penso che / credo che + congiuntivo; secondo me, per me, direi che, sono sicuro che + indicative.
    • Ask: Che ne pensi? / Che ne pensa? / Secondo te…? — don't drop the ne.
    • Dodge politely: Non saprei. · Dipende.
    • Boh, mah, beh, eh soften whatever follows — with friends.

La vedo diversamente: agreeing and disagreeing

Two ladders — from “immagino di sì” to “mi hai tolto le parole di bocca”, from “mah” to “anzi” — and the famous “sì, sì, però…”.

    • Sì, sì, però… isn't agreement — wait for the però. Anzi corrects and goes further.

    Infatti, anzi, quindi: the connectives

The little words that hold an argument together — and the false friends that trip up English speakers.

    • Confirm with infatti, correct and go further with anzi, contrast with invece.
    • Weigh up with d'altra parte, add with inoltre, conclude with quindi, sum up with insomma.
    • Siccome + indicative opens a sentence of cause; perché follows the main clause.
    • Benché / sebbene / nonostante + congiuntivo; anche se + indicative.
    • False friends: infatti confirms; attualmente = currently; in realtà = actually; alla fine = eventually.

Cinema o streaming? Holding your own in a debate

Open, add, concede, conclude — plus how to interrupt and keep the floor, at a long Saturday lunch.

    • Four moves: open (innanzitutto), add (in secondo luogo, inoltre), concede (è vero che…, però…), conclude (per concludere, insomma).
    • Concede first — it makes your objection stronger: È vero che costa tanto, però ne vale la pena.
    • Take the floor: Scusa se ti interrompo… · Posso dire una cosa?; keep it: Fammi finire! / Lasciami finire!
    • Challenge politely: Dimmi un esempio · Dimmene uno.
    • Scoppiare a ridere — a good Italian debate ends in laughter.
