The Subjunctive

Forms and triggers of the congiuntivo presente

  1. 1

Spero che ti piaccia: the congiuntivo presente

A new mood for wishes and hopes — built with one vowel swap: -are → -i, -ere / -ire → -a.

    • The congiuntivo is for what isn't a fact yet: wishes, hopes and requests — almost always after che.
    • One vowel swap: -are → -i, -ere / -ire → -a: che io parli, che tu prenda, che lei dorma.
    • The three singular forms are identical, so keep the pronoun: che io parli, che tu parli.
    • Spelling and stems: cerchi, paghi, capisca; many irregulars come from the io form — venga, dica, traduca, piaccia.
    • Voglio che, spero che, preferisco che + congiuntivo when someone else acts; same person → infinitive: Voglio partire, Spero di vederti.

Sia, abbia, faccia, vada, possa: the five essential irregulars

Five forms that turn up in every other sentence — plus the emotions that switch the congiuntivo on.

    • Five essentials: sia, abbia, faccia, vada, possa — one form for io, tu, lui, lei.
    • Noi and voi are mostly regular again: siamo, abbiamo, andiamo, andiate; loro keeps the irregular stem: siano, vadano.
    • Five more: stia, dia, sappia, voglia, debba — Spero che tu stia bene.
    • Emotions about someone else take the congiuntivo: sono contento che, mi dispiace che, ho paura che, che bello che.
    • Same person → di + infinitive: Sono contenta di essere qui.

Penso che sia vero: opinion, doubt and certainty

In Italian even “I think” takes the congiuntivo — while “I know” and “I'm sure” stay with the facts.

    • Penso che, credo che, mi sembra che, dubito che, non sono sicuro che + congiuntivo: Penso che sia vero.
    • Certainty keeps the indicative: so che, sono sicuro che, è vero che — So che è tardi.
    • Secondo me has no che, so no congiuntivo: Secondo me è vero.
    • About yourself: penso di + infinitive — Penso di avere ragione.
    • Penso che è… is common in casual speech, but the congiuntivo is the polished choice.

Bisogna che tu sia te stessa: advice and conjunctions

È importante che, bisogna che, può darsi che — and the little words like benché and prima che that always pull in the congiuntivo.

    • Advice and possibility with a specific person: è importante che, è meglio che, bisogna che, può darsi che + congiuntivo.
    • General advice, nobody in particular → infinitive: È importante arrivare presto.
    • Benché / sebbene, prima che, affinché, a meno che (non), purché, senza che always take the congiuntivo.
    • Anche se takes the indicative; perché + congiuntivo means so that.
    • Magari! — if only! / I wish!; in everyday speech magari + indicative also means maybe.
