Impersonal phrases: advice and possibility
Giving advice in Italian rarely sounds like an order. Instead, you say what's important, better or necessary — and the congiuntivo follows:
| Trigger | Meaning |
|---|---|
| è importante che… | it's important that… |
| è meglio che… | it's better that…, you'd better… |
| bisogna che… / è necessario che… | it's necessary that…, you need to… |
| è possibile che… / può darsi che… | it's possible that…, maybe… |
| è normale che… | it's normal that… |
- È meglio che tu vada a letto presto. — You'd better go to bed early.
- Può darsi che lei sia a casa. — She may be at home.
When the advice is general — nobody in particular — use the infinitive: È importante arrivare presto. Name a person, and che + congiuntivo appears: È importante che tu arrivi presto.
