The Conditional Mood

Politeness, wishes, and 'would'

    J'irais, je serais: forming the conditional

    The French “would” — the future stem with imparfait endings — and how to tell it apart from the future.

    • The conditional is the French would: the future stem + the imparfait endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
    • Regular verbs use the infinitive: parlerais, finirais; -re verbs drop the e: prendrais.
    • Irregular stems are the future ones: serais, aurais, irais, ferais, viendrais, pourrais, voudrais.
    • Je parlerai (will) vs je parlerais (would) — one letter in writing.
    • Bien + conditional says what you fancy: Je mangerais bien une crêpe.

    Pourriez-vous… ? Politeness in the conditional

    Je voudrais, pourriez-vous, auriez-vous, ça vous dérangerait — the conditional as French good manners.

    • The conditional turns a demand into a request: je voudrais, j'aimerais, pourriez-vous, auriez-vous.
    • Ça vous dérangerait de… ? — would you mind…? Serait-il possible de… ? — would it be possible to…?
    • On pourrait… makes a gentle suggestion.
    • Pourriez-vous… ?, Est-ce que vous pourriez… ? and Vous pourriez… ? are all polite — from formal to spoken.
    • Start with Bonjour — French politeness begins before the verb.

    Tu devrais, à ta place: giving advice

    Should, could and if I were you — the conditional for advice, and Luana's tips before Marina's first client meeting.

    • Tu devrais — you should; tu pourrais — you could.
    • À ta place / à votre place + conditional — if I were you: À ta place, je partirais.
    • Il vaudrait mieux + infinitive — it would be better to.
    • Negative advice: Tu ne devrais pas t'excuser.
    • With vous: vous devriez, à votre place.

    Ce serait génial: wishes, dreams and reported plans

    J'aimerais tant, ce serait génial, elle a dit qu'elle viendrait — the conditional for wishes, daydreams and the future seen from the past.

    • J'aimerais, j'adorerais + infinitive for wishes: J'aimerais revoir la mer.
    • Ce serait génial ! — that would be great!
    • Dans un monde idéal, … + conditional for daydreams.
    • A future reported from the past becomes conditional: Elle a dit qu'elle viendrait — will → would.
    • The news uses the conditional for unconfirmed facts: le train aurait une heure de retard.
    • Negative: Je ne voudrais pas rater ça.
