Softening a request
The conditional is the language of French good manners. The same request sounds blunt in the present and warm in the conditional:
| Blunt | Polite |
|---|---|
| Je veux un café. | Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. — I'd like a coffee, please. |
| Pouvez-vous m'aider ? | Pourriez-vous m'aider ? — Could you help me? |
| Vous avez un moment ? | Auriez-vous un moment ? — Would you have a moment? |
| Je veux réserver une table. | J'aimerais réserver une table. — I'd like to book a table. |
Three more you'll use every week:
- Ça vous dérangerait de + infinitive — would you mind…? Ça vous dérangerait de fermer la fenêtre ?
- Serait-il possible de + infinitive — would it be possible to…? Serait-il possible de changer l'heure ?
- On pourrait + infinitive — we could… — a gentle suggestion: On pourrait dîner ensemble ?
To a waiter, je veux can sound like a child's demand; je voudrais is the adult reflex.
