Quello che stava succedendo
Sai già raccontare cosa è successo con il simple past: I walked, we went, she bought. Ma a volte non vuoi raccontare un'azione conclusa, bensì quello che stava succedendo in un momento preciso del passato. Per questo l'inglese usa il past continuous: was / were + verbo in -ing. È quasi un calco di stavo + gerundio:
| Pronoun | Past continuous | Italiano |
|---|---|---|
| I | was reading | stavo leggendo |
| he / she / it | was reading | stava leggendo |
| you | were reading | stavi / stavate leggendo |
| we | were reading | stavamo leggendo |
| they | were reading | stavano leggendo |
- At eight o'clock, I was having dinner. — Alle otto stavo cenando.
- Marcos and Luana were talking in the kitchen. — Marcos e Luana stavano parlando in cucina.
Was e were sono il passato di to be (I was tired, we were in London); qui fanno da ausiliare. Was va con I, he, she, it; were con you, we, they. E ricorda: cenare è have dinner — make dinner vuol dire preparare la cena.
