Spoken shortcuts
Listen to Brazilians talk — or read their messages — and many familiar words shrink:
| Full form | Spoken | Example |
|---|---|---|
| estou · está · estava | tô · tá · tava | Tô chegando! — I'm almost there! |
| você | cê | Cê vem? — Are you coming? |
| para · para o · para a | pra · pro · pra | Vou pro trabalho. |
| em um · em uma | num · numa | Volto num instante. |
| não é? | né? | Tá quente, né? |
| espera aí | pera aí | Hang on! |
| vamos embora | bora! | Let's go! |
- Cê stands in for você as the subject, right before the verb: Cê tá bem? After a preposition, or on its own, say você: com você, E você?
- Num / numa are fine in writing too. The rest belong to speech and informal messages — not to an email to your bank.
- In very relaxed speech — all over Brazil, and above all in Minas Gerais and São Paulo — num can also stand for não before a verb: Num sei. — Dunno.
