New concept

Better, worse, bigger, smaller

You already compare with mais … do que: A praia é mais bonita do que a cidade. Four everyday adjectives skip the mais. Like English good → better, they have forms of their own:

Adjective Comparative English
bom / boa melhor better
ruim, mau / má pior worse
grande maior bigger
pequeno / pequena menor smaller
  • Este restaurante é melhor do que aquele. — This restaurant is better than that one.
  • O meu apartamento é menor que o seu. — My flat is smaller than yours.

Do que and plain que both work. The comparatives don't change for gender — o quarto é menor, a casa é menor — but they do have plurals: melhores, piores, maiores, menores.

Don't say mais bom or mais grande. (You may hear mais pequeno, which is standard in Portugal, and a casual mais ruim — but in Brazil menor and pior are what you want.) And ainda makes a comparison stronger: ainda melhor — even better.
