Demonstratives, comparatives, and the art of haggling

  1. 1

Este, esse, aquele: this and that

Point things out the Brazilian way — near me, near you, over there — and meet isso, the handiest little word in any shop.

    • este / esta — near me (aqui); esse / essa — near you (aí); aquele / aquela — over there (ali, lá). Plurals add -s.
    • In speech, esse covers this as well: essa camisa aqui.
    • No noun? Use isso — or aquilo for something further away: O que é isso?
    • De and em merge with them: desse, nessa, daquele, naquela.
    • Eu gosto desse vestido — never de esse.

Roupas e cores: clothes, colours, sizes

Name what you're wearing, make colours agree, ask for your size — and try it on.

    • Usar = to wear: Ela está usando um vestido.
    • A calça (trousers) and o tênis (trainers) are singular in Portuguese.
    • Colours follow the noun and agree: vermelho / vermelha; verde and azul change only for plural (azuis); rosa, laranja and cinza usually don't change.
    • Sizes: PP, P, M, G, GG — or a número: Eu visto 38.
    • Posso experimentar? — the fitting room is o provador.
    • Maior / menor for bigger / smaller; Eu levo — I'll take it.

    Mais, menos, tão: comparing things

Cheaper, prettier, just as comfortable — compare what's on the shelf with mais, menos and tão.

    • mais … (do) que — more … than; menos … (do) que — less … than; tão … quanto — as … as.
    • No -er ending in Portuguese: cheaper is mais barato, prettier mais bonito.
    • The adjective agrees: a saia é mais cara; os sapatos são mais caros.
    • After a verb, mais and menos stand alone: custa menos.
    • Never mais bom or mais grande: melhor, pior, maior, menor.
    • At the till: à vista (all at once) or parcelado — 3x sem juros.

Na feira de roupas: the art of haggling

Bargain for a dress at Ipanema's Sunday market — and find out what Brazilians mean by the jeitinho.

    • Haggle at feiras, stalls and beach vendors — not in shopping centres or supermarkets.
    • The dance: Quanto custa? → Faz por…? → Faço por… → A gente leva!
    • o último preço — the final price; um preço especial — a special price.
    • Faz por…? is just fazer: você faz, eu faço.
    • The jeitinho brasileiro: a creative way round a problem — warm flexibility at its best.
