New concept
The full set
You already know no, na, do, da — and ao, à, às from telling the time. Here is the whole family: four prepositions that fuse with the article after them.
| + o | + a | + os | + as | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| em (in, on, at) | no | na | nos | nas |
| de (of, from) | do | da | dos | das |
| por (through, along, by) | pelo | pela | pelos | pelas |
| a (to, at) | ao | à | aos | às |
The fusion isn't optional: it's nos Estados Unidos, not em os Estados Unidos. Por changes shape completely — pelo and pela come from an older form of the word, per.
- Os pais da Marina moram nos Estados Unidos. — Marina's parents live in the United States.
- A Luana está saindo da livraria. — Luana is coming out of the bookshop. (sair de — to leave, to come out of)
- Ela está com dor nas costas. — She's got backache.
