Professional Italian

Formal register and workplace communication

  1. 1

Tu o Lei? Choosing your register

From «mandamelo» to «potrebbe inviarmelo?» — five registers, the titles Italians expect, and the moment someone says «diamoci del tu».

    • Five registers: Mandamelo → Me lo mandi? → Me lo puoi inviare? → Potresti inviarmelo? → Potrebbe inviarmelo?
    • Lei takes the third person; the formal imperative is the congiuntivo: Mi dica · Si accomodi · Scusi.
    • Titles: dottore, ingegnere, avvocato, professore — drop the -e before a name: il dottor Ferri.
    • Formal words: inviare, richiedere, verificare, risolvere, La ringrazio.
    • Stay on Lei until the senior person says Diamoci del tu — and the medium chooses the register.

Gentile Dottoressa…, Cordiali saluti: the business email

The five-part skeleton, the set phrases, the capitalised Lei — and the congiuntivo hiding in every polite email.

    • Five parts: Oggetto, Saluto, Apertura, Corpo, Chiusura.
    • Gentile Dott.ssa / Sig. …, — the greeting ends with a comma; Cordiali saluti to close.
    • Le scrivo in riferimento a… · Come concordato · Le invio in allegato… · Resto a Sua disposizione.
    • La cortesia maiuscola: La, Le, Suo, Sua with a capital letter.
    • Courtesy runs on the moods: Spero che stia bene, Le sarei grata se potesse…, Qualora avesse domande…

Mi parli di Lei: the job interview

The questions you'll be asked, how to talk about your path, strengths and weaknesses — and the balance between warmth and formality.

    • Expect: Mi parli di Lei / del Suo percorso · Perché vuole lavorare con noi? · Punti di forza e punti deboli · Ha domande per noi?
    • Structure your answers: Direi che… · Primo,… Secondo,… · Nel mio ultimo incarico ho…
    • Turn weaknesses into progress: Sto imparando a…
    • Still going on → da + present: Lavoro come traduttrice da cinque anni.
    • Balance cordialità and professionalità — considered, modest, curious.

Pronto, sono Marina Becker: calls and meetings

Answering the phone, spelling your name the Italian way, and steering a meeting — from the agenda to «ricapitolando».

    • On the phone: Pronto, sono… di… · Potrei parlare con…? · Resti in linea, Glielo / Gliela passo · Vuole lasciare un messaggio?
    • Spell with cities: A come Ancona, B come Bologna, R come Roma — kappa, ics, ipsilon for foreign letters.
    • Meetings: l'ordine del giorno · fare il punto · la scadenza · rimandare.
    • Steer politely: Propongo di… · Se ho capito bene… · Sarebbe possibile…?
    • Close with Ricapitolando,… — and send the email oggi stesso.
