Hypotheses and Conditions
The conditional and the periodo ipotetico
- 1
Vorrei, potrebbe: the condizionale
One set of endings on the future stem — for polite requests, advice, wishes and the news that isn't confirmed yet.
Open lesson- The condizionale = future stem + -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: parlerei, prenderei, dormirei.
- Irregular stems as in the future: sarei, avrei, andrei, farei, vorrei, potrei, dovrei, verrei.
- Politeness: Vorrei…, Potrebbe…? (Lei), Potresti…? (tu); advice: Dovresti…
- Mi piacerebbe + infinitive or a thing: Mi piacerebbe vivere in Toscana.
- In the news, the condizionale means reportedly: Il treno sarebbe in ritardo.
- 2
Se avessi tempo…: the congiuntivo imperfetto
The “if I had…” tense — and the classic Italian if-sentence: se + congiuntivo imperfetto, then the condizionale.
Open lesson- Congiuntivo imperfetto: drop -re, add -ssi, -ssi, -sse, -ssimo, -ste, -ssero — parlassi, prendessi, dormissi.
- Irregulars: fossi, facessi, dicessi, bevessi, dessi, stessi; avere is regular — avessi.
- The unreal if: se + congiuntivo imperfetto, then condizionale — Se avessi tempo, viaggerei.
- Never the condizionale after se: ~~se avrei~~.
- Advice: Se fossi in te… / Al posto tuo…; after vorrei che, magari and come se → imperfetto: Vorrei che tu restassi.
- 3
Se piove, se piovesse: real or imagined?
The tense after se tells your listener how likely you think something is — the first two types of the periodo ipotetico.
Open lesson- Periodo ipotetico: the tense after se shows how likely you think something is.
- Real possibility: se + presente → presente / futuro / imperativo — Se piove, restiamo a casa.
- Italian may use the futuro after se: Se pioverà, resteremo a casa.
- Unlikely or impossible: se + congiuntivo imperfetto → condizionale — Se fossi ricca, comprerei una villa.
- Altrimenti / sennò + indicative for a real consequence: Prenota, sennò non troviamo posto.
- 4
Se l'avessi saputo: the roads not taken
The third type of if-sentence — for the past that can no longer change — plus the mixed type and the colloquial shortcut.
Open lesson- The past that didn't happen: se + congiuntivo trapassato → condizionale passato — Se l'avessi saputo, sarei venuto.
- Both are compound: avessi / fossi + participle, avrei / sarei + participle; essere verbs agree.
- Past cause, present result → simple condizionale: Se fossi andato a Milano, adesso lavorerei lì.
- Colloquial shortcut: Se lo sapevo, venivo — fine in a chat, not in writing.
- Col senno di poi — with hindsight.
