Pulling the tenses together

  1. 1

Present, past, future: the four tenses together

Presente, passato prossimo, imperfetto and futuro side by side — how to choose, plus abito qui da un anno — in Marina's letter home.

    • Presente — now and habits now; passato prossimo — what happened; imperfetto — what was going on, used to be; futuro — what will be.
    • A past story mixes two: Quando sono arrivata, pioveva.
    • Still going on? Present + da: Abito a Firenze da un anno.
    • Finished? Passato prossimo + per: Ho abitato a Siena per due anni.
    • Time words point the way: ieri · da bambino · adesso · domani.

Siamo arrivati! The pasts on the road

Telling the first days at the Cinque Terre — events and scenery, ci siamo seduti, and l'ho comprata: when the participle agrees with the object.

    • Travel stories mix passato prossimo (what you did) and imperfetto (what it was like).
    • Reflexive verbs take essere and agree: ci siamo seduti / sedute.
    • Lo, la, li, le before avere make the participle agree: l'ho comprata, li abbiamo mangiati.
    • Ne usually agrees too: ne abbiamo mangiati tre.
    • Più felice che mai — happier than ever.

Mi manca Firenze: sunset and missing someone

Mancare works like piacere — mi manca, mi mancano, mi mancherete — plus di or che in comparisons, on the rocks at sunset.

    • Mancare works like piacere: mi manca Firenze, mi mancano i miei amici.
    • Mi manchi = I miss you; ti manco? = do you miss me?; mi mancherete = I'll miss you all.
    • It also means to be missing / left: manca il sale, mancano tre giorni, quanto manca?
    • Than: di before nouns and pronouns, che between verbs or adjectives.
    • Più felice che mai — happier than ever; siete i migliori — you're the best.

Non è un addio: looking back, looking ahead

Past, present and future in a single goodbye — arrivederci or addio, in bocca al lupo, and promises to come back.

    • Goodbyes: ciao, arrivederci, a presto, ci vediamo, ci sentiamo, buon viaggio, grazie di tutto.
    • Arrivederci = until next time; addio = for ever.
    • In bocca al lupo! — Crepi!
    • A goodbye uses every tense: è stato bellissimo · mi mancate già · tornerò.
    • Venire a trovare: Verrò a trovarvi — I'll come and visit you.
