Memories

Imperfetto vs passato prossimo

  1. 1

Giocavo: the past of old habits

The imperfetto — what you used to do, every summer, every Sunday — with endings regular enough to learn in one go.

    • The imperfetto is for habits and how things used to be: Da bambino giocavo in piazza.
    • Endings for all three groups: -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano — giocavo, leggevo, dormivo.
    • Signal words: da bambino, di solito, sempre, ogni estate, la domenica, una volta.
    • English used to, would and the habitual simple past all become the imperfetto.
    • One event → passato prossimo; a habit → imperfetto.

Ero, avevo, faceva: setting the scene

The few verbs that break the imperfetto pattern — and how to say what things were like: age, weather, time and feelings.

    • Essere is the one true irregular: ero, eri, era, eravamo, eravate, erano.
    • Fare, bere, dire use a longer stem: facevo, bevevo, dicevo.
    • The imperfetto describes the scene: age (avevo sette anni), weather (faceva caldo), time (erano le otto), feelings (ero stanca).
    • C'era (there was) and c'erano (there were).
    • Ask with com'era?, che tempo faceva?, quanti anni avevi?

    Stavo… quando: two pasts together

The imperfetto sets the scene, the passato prossimo tells what happened — and Bidu causes chaos at the Mercato Centrale.

    • Stories need both pasts: the imperfetto for the scene, the passato prossimo for what happened.
    • Ero a casa quando ha suonato il telefono — background first, then the event.
    • Something in progress: stavo + gerund — stavo dormendo.
    • Clues: ieri, all'improvviso, un giorno → passato prossimo; mentre, sempre, di solito → imperfetto.
    • Ho conosciuto = I met; conoscevo = I knew. Ho saputo = I found out; sapevo = I knew.

    L'album di foto: childhood memories

Bikes, hide-and-seek and a mother calling from the window — talking about childhood, and why the piazza is the heart of an Italian town.

    • Childhood words: l'infanzia, giocare a nascondino, andare in bicicletta, arrampicarsi sugli alberi, i giocattoli, la maestra.
    • Da piccolo / da bambino + imperfetto: Da piccola guardavo i cartoni animati.
    • Una volta + imperfetto = back then; + passato prossimo = once.
    • Remembering: mi ricordo… / ricordo…, ti ricordi…?, che bei ricordi!
    • The piazza is where Italian childhoods happened — and still do.
