Avere: what's wrong
To say what's wrong with you, Italian uses avere + the symptom — and, unlike English, it usually keeps the article:
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| Ho la febbre. | I've got a temperature. |
| Ho la tosse. | I've got a cough. |
| Ho il raffreddore. | I've got a cold. |
| Ho l'influenza. | I've got flu. |
| Ho la nausea. | I feel sick. |
How high? Ho la febbre a trentotto — I've got a temperature of 38. Italians measure in degrees Celsius, so 37.5 is already un po' di febbre — a slight temperature.
The aches from the last lesson work the same way: Ho la febbre e mal di gola.
