Regular -ere and -ire verbs at the table

  1. 1

Prendo, leggo, dormo: -ere and -ire verbs

The other two regular verb families — almost twins, with a single difference in the voi form.

    • -ere: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ete, -ono (prendo, prendi, prende…).
    • -ire: -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono (dormo, dormi, dorme…).
    • The only difference is voi: prendete but dormite.
    • Prendere is how you order: Prendo un caffè. Bere: bevo, bevi, beve…
    • Offro io! — it's my treat.

In trattoria: vorrei… and il conto

    • Order with Vorrei…, Per me… or Prendo…
    • Un altro (m) / un'altra (f): un altro bicchiere, un'altra birra.
    • Ask for the bill: Il conto, per favore — it won't come by itself.

    All'aperitivo: some crostini, please

Say “some” with del, della, dei, suggest “shall we…?” — and join Luana and Marina for a Florentine aperitivo.

    • “Some” = di + article: del, dello, della, dell', dei, degli, delle.
    • It's optional, and dropped after non: Non ho olive.
    • Prendiamo…? — shall we have…? Andiamo! — let's go!
    • Answer with Volentieri!, Perché no? or Dai!
    • L'aperitivo: a drink and stuzzichini before dinner. Cin cin!
