New concept
Lei borrows the lui / lei form
When you speak to someone as Lei, the verb takes the lui / lei form — the third person. That's true of every verb you know:
| To a friend (tu) | To a stranger (Lei) | |
|---|---|---|
| parlare | Parli inglese? | Parla inglese? |
| cercare | Cerchi qualcosa? | Cerca qualcosa? |
| essere | Sei di qui? | È di qui? |
| avere | Hai una mappa? | Ha una mappa? |
| stare | Come stai? | Come sta? |
Italians rarely say the word Lei itself — the verb is enough: Parla inglese? If you need to be clear, add it after the verb: E Lei, come sta?
To get a stranger's attention: Mi scusi or Scusi. To a friend: Scusa. If someone's in your way: Permesso! — excuse me, may I get by?
