New concept
One pattern, hundreds of verbs
Most Italian verbs end in -are, and nearly all of them are regular. Take off -are and add these endings:
| Pronoun | Ending | Parlare (to speak) | Camminare (to walk) | Comprare (to buy) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| io | -o | parlo | cammino | compro |
| tu | -i | parli | cammini | compri |
| lui / lei / Lei | -a | parla | cammina | compra |
| noi | -iamo | parliamo | camminiamo | compriamo |
| voi | -ate | parlate | camminate | comprate |
| loro | -ano | parlano | camminano | comprano |
Watch the stress in the loro form: it stays on the same syllable as in io, far from the end — PAR-lano, cam-MI-nano, COM-prano. Never “par-LA-no”.
