New concept

In the meeting

Everyday meetings are palaveri (informal) or kokous (formal). The language of a Finnish meeting is short, practical — and full of the conditional:

Finnish English
esityslista the agenda
määräaika / (spoken) dedis the deadline
Ehdottaisin, että… I'd suggest that…
Voisinko kommentoida? Could I comment?
Kuka hoitaa tämän? — Minä voin hoitaa sen. Who'll take care of this? — I can take care of it.
Palataan tähän ensi viikolla. Let's come back to this next week.
Sovitaanko näin? — Sovitaan. Shall we agree on that? — Agreed.
Onko muuta? Anything else? (any other business?)

Notice the passive for let's: palataan, sovitaan — the written-Finnish cousin of spoken me mennään.
