New concept
No will, no going to
Finnish has no future tense. You use the ordinary present and let a time word carry the future:
- Huomenna lähden Lappiin. — Tomorrow I'm leaving for Lapland.
- Ensi viikolla matkustamme junalla. — Next week we'll travel by train.
- Soitan sinulle illalla. — I'll ring you this evening.
| Finnish | English |
|---|---|
| huomenna | tomorrow |
| ylihuomenna | the day after tomorrow |
| illalla | this evening, in the evening |
| pian | soon |
| ensi viikolla | next week |
| ensi kuussa | next month |
| ensi vuonna | next year |
Compare the past from unit 12: viime viikolla (last week) ↔ ensi viikolla (next week).
