Must: the person goes into the genitive

Must works differently from can and want. The verb täytyy (or pitää) never changes, and the person who must do something takes the genitive -n — the same form as minun (my):

Finnish English
Minun täytyy mennä. I must go. / I've got to go.
Sinun pitää levätä. You must rest.
Hänen täytyy tehdä töitä. He / she has to work.
Meidän täytyy opiskella. We have to study.
Marinan täytyy siivota. Marina has to tidy up.

Literally it's “of me it is necessary to go”. Täytyy and pitää mean the same here; pitää is a little more everyday.

The classic mistake: Minä täytyy ✗. The person is always in the genitive: Minun täytyy ✓.
