Places and Time

The six local cases

  1. 1

Missä, mistä, mihin: in, out of, into

The three inner local cases — being in a place, coming out of it and going into it.

    • Missä? (where?) → -ssa / -ssä: Olen kahvilassa.
    • Mistä? (where from?) → -sta / -stä: Tulen kahvilasta.
    • Mihin? / Minne? (where to?) → the illative: kahvilaan, taloon, kotiin, huoneeseen, Helsinkiin.
    • The verb decides: olla / asua → missä, tulla / lähteä → mistä, mennä → mihin.
    • Never menen kahvilassa: going somewhere is always the into form.

Torilla, torilta, torille: on, off, onto

The three outer local cases — for surfaces, open places, people and getting about by bike.

    • The outer cases: -lla / -llä (on, at), -lta / -ltä (off, from), -lle (onto, to).
    • Use them for surfaces, open places (torilla, asemalla, kadulla), people (Soitan Luanalle) and transport (pyörällä, bussilla).
    • At can be inner or outer: kahvilassa (a building) but torilla (an open square).
    • kotona / kotoa / kotiin — at home / from home / home.
    • töissä / töistä / töihin — at work / from work / to work.

  3. 3

Kolmekymmentä, sata: numbers and the hour

Count from twenty to a hundred, then ask and tell the time on the hour.

    • Tens: digit + -kymmentä — kaksikymmentä, kolmekymmentä…; 100 = sata.
    • Tens and units in one word: kolmekymmentäviisi (35).
    • Paljonko kello on? / Mitä kello on? — Kello on kolme. Tasan = exactly.
    • Timetables use the 24-hour clock with a dot: klo 16.30.
    • In speech: kakskyt, kolkyt, nelkyt, viiskyt.

Puoli kymmenen: half past — and Luana's day

Half and quarter hours, “at six”, the days of the week — and a day in Luana's life.

    • Puoli + the next hour: puoli kymmenen = 9:30.
    • Varttia yli = quarter past, varttia vaille = quarter to; kymmenen yli, viittä vaille.
    • At six: kello kuusi or kuudelta; at half seven: puoli kahdeksalta.
    • Times of day: aamulla, päivällä, iltapäivällä, illalla, yöllä.
    • Days: maanantaina, tiistaina… — no capital letters. And be on time!
