Six idioms for a bad day
Idioms rarely translate word for word, but the pictures they paint stick. Six for when things go wrong:
| Idiom | Literally | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| meter la pata | to put your paw in | to put your foot in it, to mess up |
| pagar el pato | to pay for the duck | to take the blame for someone else |
| hacer el ridículo | to do the ridiculous | to make a fool of yourself |
| tragar quina | to swallow quinine | to grin and bear it |
| tirar la toalla | to throw in the towel | to give up |
| estar hasta las narices | to be up to your nostrils | to be fed up |
Quinine was a famously bitter medicine — hence tragar quina. Estar hasta las narices de + thing: Estoy hasta las narices de este ruido. — I'm fed up with this noise.
