New concept

If things were different

To imagine a situation that isn't real — or isn't likely — Spanish uses si + the imperfect subjunctive, and then the conditional:

Si tuviera tiempo, viajaría más. — If I had time, I'd travel more.

To form the imperfect subjunctive, take the ellos form of the pretérito indefinido, drop -ron and add -ra:

Pronoun Hablar (hablaron) Comer (comieron) Vivir (vivieron)
yo hablara comiera viviera
tú hablaras comieras vivieras
él / ella / usted hablara comiera viviera
nosotros habláramos comiéramos viviéramos
vosotros hablarais comierais vivierais
ellos / ellas / ustedes hablaran comieran vivieran

The nosotros form always carries an accent: habláramos, comiéramos, viviéramos.
