New concept
If I had…, I would have…
To imagine a different past, both halves step back a tense:
Si lo hubiera sabido, habría venido antes. — If I'd known, I'd have come earlier.
- The si half: hubiera (the imperfect subjunctive of haber) + past participle.
- The other half: habría (the conditional of haber) + past participle.
| Pronoun | Si… | …then |
|---|---|---|
| yo | hubiera sabido | habría venido |
| tú | hubieras sabido | habrías venido |
| él / ella / usted | hubiera sabido | habría venido |
| nosotros | hubiéramos sabido | habríamos venido |
| vosotros | hubierais sabido | habríais venido |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hubieran sabido | habrían venido |
In speech, many Spaniards use hubiera in both halves — Si lo hubiera sabido, hubiera venido antes — and that's correct too. The -se form, hubiese, works in the si half.
