New concept
The scene and the event
Real stories use both past tenses together. Think of a film:
- the imperfecto sets the scene — what was going on, what things were like;
- the indefinido moves the plot — something happens, once, and it's over.
Estaba en casa cuando sonó el teléfono. — I was at home when the phone rang.
| Imperfecto — the scene | Indefinido — what happened |
|---|---|
| Dormía… | …cuando Bidu ladró. |
| Hacía sol… | …así que fuimos a la playa. |
| Tenía veinte años… | …cuando llegó a Madrid. |
For something in progress, Spanish often uses estar in the imperfecto + the -ndo form: Estaba durmiendo cuando Bidu ladró. — I was sleeping when Bidu barked. Here dormía and estaba durmiendo mean the same.
New words: sonar — to ring; ladrar — to bark.
