New concept
Fui: was and went
The most common verbs are irregular in the past — and two of them share every form. Ser (to be) and ir (to go) are identical in the pretérito indefinido:
| Pronoun | Ser / Ir |
|---|---|
| yo | fui |
| tú | fuiste |
| él / ella / usted | fue |
| nosotros | fuimos |
| vosotros | fuisteis |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | fueron |
None of them takes an accent: fui, fue. Context tells the two verbs apart. With a place after a, it's ir; with a description, it's ser:
- Fui a un concierto. — I went to a concert.
- El concierto fue increíble. — The concert was amazing.
The question you'll hear every Monday: ¿Qué tal el fin de semana? — How was the weekend? ¿Cómo fue…? works too.
