English has this and that. Spanish has three steps, depending on where the thing is:

	Near me — aquí	Near you — ahí	Over there — allí
masculine	este	ese	aquel
feminine	esta	esa	aquella
masculine plural	estos	esos	aquellos
feminine plural	estas	esas	aquellas

Like adjectives, they agree with the noun — but they come before it: este vestido (this dress), esa camisa (that shirt, by you), aquel sombrero (that hat over there), aquellas sandalias (those sandals over there).
