New concept
Three families, one idea
You already know the regular -ar verbs: drop -ar, add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an. Spanish has two more regular families — verbs ending in -er and -ir — and they work the same way. Drop the ending, add a new set:
| Pronoun | hablar (-ar) | comer (-er) | beber (-er) | vivir (-ir) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| yo | hablo | como | bebo | vivo |
| tú | hablas | comes | bebes | vives |
| él / ella / usted | habla | come | bebe | vive |
| nosotros / nosotras | hablamos | comemos | bebemos | vivimos |
| vosotros / vosotras | habláis | coméis | bebéis | vivís |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hablan | comen | beben | viven |
- -er endings: -o, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en
- -ir endings: -o, -es, -e, -imos, -ís, -en
-er and -ir verbs differ in two places only — nosotros and vosotros. Vivir means to live, both in a place and in general: Vivo en Madrid.
