As if — but it isn't
Als ob describes how something looks, sounds or feels, while hinting that it isn't really so. It takes the Konjunktiv II, and like wenn it sends the verb to the end:
- Er tut, als ob er alles wüsste. — He acts as if he knew everything.
- Das schmeckt, als ob es aus Bayern käme. — That tastes as if it came from Bavaria.
- Sie sieht aus, als ob sie geweint hätte. — She looks as if she'd been crying.
The verbs that usually lead into it:
| Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|
| (so) tun, als ob | to act as if, to pretend |
| aussehen, als ob | to look as if |
| klingen, als ob | to sound as if |
| sich anfühlen, als ob | to feel as if |
| es scheint, als ob | it seems as if |
You'll meet a few more short Konjunktiv II forms here, built on the past stem with an umlaut where possible: wissen → wüsste, kommen → käme, geben → gäbe, gehen → ginge. For something in the past, use hätte / wäre + participle, just as in past wenn-sentences.
