The würde workhorse
Sein, haben and the modal verbs have their own Konjunktiv II forms — wäre, hätte, könnte. For almost every other verb, spoken German builds the would form with würde + the infinitive at the end:
Ich würde gern nach Hamburg fahren. — I'd like to go to Hamburg.
| Pronoun | würde | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ich | würde | Ich würde das nicht machen. |
| du | würdest | Würdest du mitkommen? |
| er / sie / es | würde | Sie würde gern bleiben. |
| wir | würden | Wir würden gern helfen. |
| ihr | würdet | Würdet ihr warten? |
| sie / Sie | würden | Würden Sie bitte warten? |
Würde is the Konjunktiv II of werden: wurde + umlaut. Most other verbs have one-word forms too — ich käme (I'd come), ich ginge (I'd go) — and a few of them are common, but many sound formal or bookish in speech. For now, you only need to recognise them.
