War, hatte, konnte — the Präteritum you actually need

  1. 1

War und hatte: the past you say out loud

The simple past of sein and haben — the two verbs Germans put in the Präteritum even in conversation.

    • German has two past tenses: the Perfekt for most verbs in conversation, the Präteritum for writing.
    • Sein and haben use the Präteritum even in speech: war, hatte.
    • Ich and er / sie / es share a form, with no ending: ich war, er hatte.
    • The rest: du warst / hattest, wir waren / hatten, ihr wart / hattet, sie waren / hatten.
    • Time words like gestern, damals and früher often come first — the verb stays second: Früher hatte ich einen Hund.

Konnte, musste, durfte: modals in the past

What you could, had to, were allowed to and wanted to do — the modal verbs in the Präteritum.

    • Modal verbs take the Präteritum even in conversation: konnte, musste, durfte, wollte, sollte, mochte.
    • The recipe: drop the umlaut, add -te, then the usual endings — du konntest, wir konnten.
    • Ich and er / sie / es share a form: ich musste, sie musste.
    • The infinitive still goes to the end: Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen.
    • Musste nicht = didn't have to; durfte nicht = wasn't allowed to.
    • Was wolltest du werden? — Ich wollte Köchin / Koch werden. No article before the job.

Es war einmal: the Präteritum of stories

Regular -te forms and the strong verbs every story needs — the past tense of books, news and fairy tales.

    • In writing — novels, news, fairy tales — German tells the past in the Präteritum, for every verb.
    • Regular verbs add -te: spielte, wohnte; stems in -t or -d add -ete: arbeitete.
    • Strong verbs change their vowel instead: ging, kam, sah, fuhr, fand, nahm.
    • Ich and er / sie / es share a form with no ending: ich ging, sie ging.
    • In conversation, keep the Perfekt for most verbs — war, hatte and the modals are the exceptions.
    • Fairy tales start with Es war einmal…

Als ich klein war: als or wenn?

Two words for “when” in the past — one for a single moment or period, one for every time — and Marcos's childhood in Bavaria.

    • Als — one event or one period in the past: Als ich klein war, …
    • Wenn — every time (often immer wenn), and for the present and future: Wenn es dunkel wurde, …
    • Wann only asks questions: Wann kommst du?
    • Als and wenn send the verb to the end: als ich klein war.
    • When the clause comes first, the main verb follows the comma: Als ich klein war, wohnte ich in Boston.
    • Werden with an age means to turn: Als ich sieben wurde, …
