Mir gefällt das Kleid
To say you like something you see — clothes, a flat, a city — German often uses gefallen, to please. The thing you like is the subject; the person who likes it goes in the dative case:
- Mir gefällt dieses Kleid. / Dieses Kleid gefällt mir. — I like this dress. (literally: This dress pleases me.)
- Gefällt dir der Hut? — Do you like the hat?
- Die Schuhe gefallen mir nicht. — I don't like the shoes. (plural subject → gefallen)
| Subject | Dative | English |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mir | (to) me |
| du | dir | (to) you |
| er / sie | ihm / ihr | (to) him / her |
| wir | uns | (to) us |
| ihr | euch | (to) you (plural) |
| sie / Sie | ihnen / Ihnen | (to) them / you (formal) |
Two more shop verbs work the same way: stehen — Das Kleid steht dir gut! — The dress suits you! — and passen — Die Hose passt mir nicht. — The trousers don't fit me.
