Verbs that split in two

English has phrasal verbs: get up, ring back. German has something similar — separable verbs, with a small prefix stuck to the front: auf|stehen (to get up), an|rufen (to call).

In a normal sentence, the verb splits. The main part takes second place as usual, and the prefix jumps to the very end:

  • aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. — I get up at seven.
  • anrufen → Marina ruft ihre Mutter an. — Marina calls her mum.
Verb English In a sentence
aufstehen to get up Ich stehe früh (early) auf.
aufwachen to wake up Ich wache um sechs auf.
anrufen to call, to ring Ich rufe Luana an.
einkaufen to do the shopping Wir kaufen am Samstag ein.
fernsehen to watch TV Er sieht abends fern.
mitkommen to come along Kommst du mit?

The prefix carries the stress: AUFstehen, FERNsehen.

Next: conjugate aufstehen. Type both parts — stehe auf.
