Possessives and a Sunday lunch with Marcos's family
- 1
Meu, minha: my, your, our
Say my, your and our — and make them agree with the thing, not the owner.
Lektion öffnen- Possessives agree with the thing owned, never the owner: o meu livro, a minha casa.
- Each has four forms: meu / minha / meus / minhas, seu / sua / seus / suas, nosso / nossa / nossos / nossas.
- Seu / sua is the possessive of você — in conversation it means your.
- With a gente, "our" is still nosso: A gente adora o nosso bairro.
- The article is optional: a minha casa = minha casa.
- After ser, the possessive alone means mine, yours, ours: A chave é minha.
- 2
A casa: room by room
Rooms and furniture, what a house has, and where everything is.
Lektion öffnen- Rooms: a sala, a cozinha, o quarto, o banheiro, a varanda, o jardim — the possessive follows their gender.
- Tem with a subject means has: A casa tem três quartos.
- Tem with no subject means there is / there are: Tem um sofá na sala.
- Ficar says where a place is: Onde fica o banheiro?
- Em + article → no / na, even before a possessive: no meu quarto, na nossa varanda.
- 3
A família: Sunday lunch
Pai, mãe, avó and the rest of the family — at a long Brazilian Sunday lunch.
Lektion öffnen- Family pairs: pai/mãe, irmão/irmã, filho/filha, avô/avó, tio/tia, primo/prima, marido/esposa.
- Avô (grandfather) and avó (grandmother) differ only in the accent — and in the sound.
- Mixed groups take the masculine plural: os pais (parents), os irmãos (siblings), os filhos (children), os avós (grandparents).
- Introduce people with Este é… / Esta é…: Esta é a minha mãe.
- Seu and Dona + first name are respectful titles: Seu Carlos, Dona Rosa.
- The Sunday almoço em família is long, generous and hard to say no to.
- 4
Dele, dela: whose is it?
Why Brazilians say “a casa dela” for her house — and how to ask whose something is.
Lektion öffnen- In conversation, seu / sua means your.
- For his, her, their, put dele, dela, deles, delas after the noun: a casa dela.
- Dele / dela agree with the owner; the article before the noun agrees with the thing and stays: as chaves dele.
- De vocês is your for a group: o jardim de vocês.
- No 's in Portuguese: do / da / dos + owner — o cachorro do Marcos.
- Ask De quem é…? — answer É do Marcos or É dele.
