Meet the family

Family words come in neat masculine/feminine pairs:

Masculine Feminine English
o pai a mãe father / mother
o irmão a irmã brother / sister
o filho a filha son / daughter
o avô a avó grandfather / grandmother
o tio a tia uncle / aunt
o primo a prima cousin
o marido a esposa husband / wife

Watch the accents: avô has a closed o (like oh), avó an open one (like aw) — two different people. At home they're often vovô and vovó.

To introduce someone, say este é for a man and esta é for a woman: Este é o meu pai. Esta é a minha avó. In speech you'll also hear esse é / essa é — same meaning.
