The gerund and merged prepositions
- 1
Sto parlando: what's happening right now
Stare plus the gerundio for what's going on at this very moment — and when Italian doesn't bother with it.
Lektion öffnen- Stare + gerundio — for what's happening at this very moment: Sto parlando.
- -are → -ando (parlando); -ere / -ire → -endo (prendendo, dormendo).
- Only stare changes: sto, stai, sta, stiamo, state, stanno.
- The simple present often does the job too: Cosa fai? — Leggo.
- Never for plans: Domani parto — I'm leaving tomorrow.

La torta di compleanno: more about the gerundio
Gerunds that bend the rule, where the pronoun goes — and a surprise cake in the kitchen for Marcos.
Lektion öffnen- Three irregular gerunds: fare → facendo, bere → bevendo, dire → dicendo.
- Cosa stai facendo? — What are you doing?
- Pronouns go before stare or glued to the gerundio: mi sto preparando / sto preparandomi.
- Never in between: not ~~sto mi preparando~~.
- Kitchen words: la farina, lo zucchero, le uova, il forno, la torta.

Al, nel, sul: prepositions + articles
Di, a, da, in and su melt into the article that follows — al mercato, nella borsa, sul tavolo — on a busy morning of errands in Florence.
Lektion öffnen- Di, a, da, in, su merge with the article: al mercato, dal fornaio, nella borsa, sul tavolo, della nonna.
- In → ne-, di → de-: nel, nella, del, della.
- ll before the article's l: allo, all', alla, alle.
- Da + person — at / to someone's: dal medico, da Luana.
- No article, so no merger: in farmacia, in banca, in centro, a casa.

Una passeggiata nel quartiere
Stare per for what's about to happen, per for wandering through a place — and an evening stroll through Florence with Marina and Marcos.
Lektion öffnen- Stare per + infinitive — about to: Sta per piovere. Sto per uscire.
- Sto uscendo (already on my way) vs sto per uscire (any minute now).
- Per + place for wandering through it: una passeggiata per il quartiere.
- La passeggiata — the evening stroll; portare a spasso il cane — to walk the dog.
- La libreria is a bookshop — a library is la biblioteca.
