Two words become one

In Italian, five prepositions — di, a, da, in, su — merge with a following definite article into one word. It isn't optional: a il mercato is simply wrong; it's al mercato.

  • Vado al mercato. (a + il) — I'm going to the market.
  • Torno dal mercato. (da + il) — I'm coming back from the market.
  • Il libro è sul tavolo. (su + il) — The book is on the table.
  • Le chiavi sono nella borsa. (in + la) — The keys are in the bag.
  • La casa della nonna (di + la) — Grandma's house.

In turns into ne- and di into de- before the article: nel, nella, del, della.
