The Subjunctive II

Konjunktiv II: würde, wäre, hätte

  1. 1

Wäre, hätte: the mood of what isn't real

Meet the Konjunktiv II through its two key forms — for wishes, polite orders and things that could be.

    • The Konjunktiv II is the mood of wishes, politeness and imagination — English would, could, were.
    • wäre (would be) and hätte (would have): Präteritum + umlaut — war → wäre, hatte → hätte.
    • The umlaut matters: ich war = I was, ich wäre = I would be; ich hatte = I had, ich hätte = I would have.
    • Ich hätte gern… is the polite way to order; Das wäre toll! — that would be great.
    • Möchte is itself a Konjunktiv II — of mögen.

Ich würde gern…: würde + infinitive

The everyday “would” for every other verb — what you'd like to do, and what you'd rather do instead.

    • For most verbs, the Konjunktiv II is würde + infinitive: Ich würde gern nach Hamburg fahren.
    • ich würde, du würdest, er würde, wir würden, ihr würdet, sie würden.
    • With gern, lieber, am liebsten it expresses wishes and preferences.
    • Mind the umlaut: würde = would, wurde = became, got.
    • Wie wäre es mit…? — How about…?
    • In Bavaria and Austria: Ich tät gern… — informal, best avoided in writing.

    Könnten Sie…? Polite requests

Könnte, würde, dürfte, hätte — four ways to ask politely, put to the test at a Berlin Bürgeramt.

    • The Konjunktiv II makes requests polite: Könnten Sie…? Würden Sie…? Dürfte ich…? Hätten Sie…?
    • könnte = konnte + umlaut: could, might — Es könnte regnen.
    • Mind the umlauts: konnten and wurden are plain past forms.
    • Wrapped questions send the verb to the end: Könnten Sie mir sagen, wo das Bürgeramt ist? — and ob for yes/no.
    • In Germany you register your address — die Anmeldung — usually within two weeks of moving in.

    Du solltest…: giving advice

Sollte, müsste, könnte and an deiner Stelle würde ich — how Germans give advice, gently.

    • Advice runs on the Konjunktiv II: Du solltest… — you should.
    • Ich müsste… — I really ought to; Du könntest… — you could.
    • An deiner Stelle würde ich… — if I were you, I'd…
    • Sollte looks like the Präteritum of sollen — context tells you which.
    • Du musst sounds like a rule — or, with unbedingt, an enthusiastic tip.
    • Lass mich das mal umformulieren buys you time and sounds thoughtful.
