Un aiutante per chiedere e negare

In italiano basta l'intonazione: Parli inglese? E per negare basta un non: Non parlo inglese. In inglese, con quasi tutti i verbi, serve un ausiliare: do, oppure does con he, she, it.

I / you / we / they he / she / it
+ I speak she speaks
− I don't speak she doesn't speak
? Do you speak? Does she speak?
  • Don't = do not; doesn't = does not.
  • Con does e doesn't la -s sta già nell'ausiliare, quindi il verbo torna alla forma base: Does she live here? She doesn't live here.
  • Come la -s, does va con qualsiasi soggetto singolare: Does Luana speak Spanish?
  • Le risposte brevi ripetono l'ausiliare, non il verbo: Do you speak English? — Yes, I do. / No, I don't. Does she live here? — Yes, she does. / No, she doesn't.
