Domande e negazione con to be
Con to be è tutto molto semplice:
- Negazione: aggiungi not dopo il verbo. I'm not tired. — Non sono stanca.
- Domanda: metti il verbo prima del soggetto. You are tired. → Are you tired? — Sei stanca?
- Risposta breve: ripeti solo soggetto e verbo. Are you tired? — Yes, I am. / No, I'm not.
| Affermativa | Negativa | Domanda |
|---|---|---|
| I'm cold. | I'm not cold. | Am I late? |
| She's from Brazil. | She isn't from Spain. | Is she from Brazil? |
| They're at home. | They aren't at home. | Are they at home? |
Isn't = is not; aren't = are not. Con I non esiste una contrazione del genere: si dice I'm not. E nella risposta breve affermativa non si contrae: Yes, I am, mai Yes, I'm.
In italiano una domanda si riconosce spesso solo dall'intonazione (Sei stanca?). In inglese cambia l'ordine delle parole: You are tired? non basta, ci vuole Are you tired?
