Opinions & Debates

British understatement, hedging, and the art of disagreeing nicely

  1. 1

I reckon, I'd say: dar tu opinión

De un suave *I reckon* a un firme *without a doubt* — y por qué en inglés se dice *I don't think it's a good idea*.

    • Abre tu opinión según la fuerza: I reckon / I think → I'd say → In my opinion → Without a doubt.
    • I reckon es coloquial; I'd say suaviza sin restar fuerza.
    • Evita according to me: di in my opinion o I think.
    • Se niega think: I don't think it's a good idea.
    • I think so / I don't think so / I hope so / I hope not.
    • Para preguntar: What do you think of…?, What did you make of…? — nunca How do you think?

Not bad, quite good: el understatement británico

    • Not very + adjetivo positivo critica con tacto: It wasn't very good.
    • Para elogiar de verdad: really good, lovely, brilliant.

I couldn't agree more: estar de acuerdo y discrepar

*I agree* (nunca *I'm agree*), *you're right*, *fair point*, *I see it differently* — y el misterioso *yeah, no*.

    • I agree (with you) — nunca I'm agree; en negativo, I don't agree o I disagree.
    • Tienes razón es You're right.
    • Acuerdo: I suppose so → fair enough → exactly → I couldn't agree more.
    • Desacuerdo con tacto: I'm not so sure, I see your point, but…, I see it differently.
    • On the contrary es fuerte: úsalo con moderación.
    • En yeah, no, lo que cuenta es lo que viene después.

Mind you, having said that: conectores para debatir

Los conectores que hilan un argumento a la británica — y dos falsos amigos peligrosos: *actually* y *eventually*.

    • On the one hand…, on the other… — siempre con on.
    • Mind you añade una pega; having said that / that said matiza lo que acabas de decir.
    • To be fair, then again y at the end of the day son de conversación; en un correo, however.
    • Actually = en realidad; actualmente = currently / at the moment.
    • Eventually = al final; eventual = possible o temporary.
