Opinions & Debates

How Brazilians argue without arguing

  1. 1

    Acho que…: giving your opinion

From a soft *acho que* to a firm *tenho certeza* — and why *não acho que* takes the subjunctive.

    • Opinions come with an opener: acho que (soft) → na minha opinião, pra mim → tenho certeza que, sem dúvida (firm).
    • Eu diria que… — the conditional makes a view sound considered rather than blunt.
    • Acho que + indicative; não acho que + subjunctive: Não acho que seja caro.
    • Most natural in speech: keep acho que and negate the second verb — Acho que não é caro.
    • Acho que sim / acho que não — I think so / I don't think so.
    • O que você achou? — Achei o filme ótimo: achar + thing + adjective.

    Concordo, discordo: agreeing and disagreeing

Agree warmly, disagree gently — *faz sentido*, *depende*, *não é bem assim* and the art of *sim, sim, mas…*

    • Agree with concordo (com), é verdade, faz sentido — or go all in: concordo plenamente, com certeza!
    • Disagree gently: não sei, não, depende, não é bem assim, concordo em parte, eu vejo de outro jeito.
    • Concordar com, discordar de: Discordo do Marcos.
    • A bare Você está errado sounds confrontational — question the idea, not the person.
    • Sim, sim, mas… — the real view comes after the mas.
    • Weigh both sides with por um lado…, por outro…

Porém, além disso, ou seja: building an argument

The small words that hold an argument together — and which belong in speech and which in writing.

    • Além disso adds a point; ou seja restates it; por isso draws the consequence.
    • Aliás — by the way, or in fact when you upgrade what you've just said.
    • Mesmo assim — even so: grant the drawback, keep your position.
    • In speech, mas; in writing and meetings, porém and no entanto.
    • Porém and no entanto can sit mid-sentence between commas; mas always opens its clause.

Sei lá, né? Arguing without arguing

Softeners, questions that cushion, and a friendly debate over lunch: cinema or streaming?

    • Meio (kind of), um pouco, né?, sei lá and olha soften a view without changing it.
    • Meio meaning a bit doesn't change: meio cansada.
    • Turn a criticism into a question: Será que…?, Não seria melhor…?, E se a gente…?
    • Go after the idea, never the person — a flat Você está errado lands hard.
    • Cair na gargalhada — to burst out laughing: the best way for a debate to end.
